"The Unlost 30 Years"
Japan’s economic stagnation from the early 1990s bubble collapse to the present is often labeled the "Lost 30 Years." However, not everything was lost during this period. For instance, in September 2024, the Emmy Award, television’s highest honor, was won by SHOGUN, starring and produced by Hiroyuki Sanada. In baseball, Shohei Ohtani succeeded as a two-way player, hailed as a "Unicorn" and possibly the greatest player in Major League history. Japanese anime has expanded globally, capturing worldwide audiences; Dragon Ball, an anime I loved as a child, is now hugely popular with my son’s generation. American children today are often even more knowledgeable about Dragon Ball episodes than I am. Additionally, anime like Pokémon and Attack on Titan have captivated audiences across the U.S.
Then there’s Japanese cuisine: with over 30,000 Japanese restaurants across the U.S., outnumbering McDonald's and Starbucks combined, it has truly become a staple of American dining. Numerous aspects of Japanese business, culture, and creativity have successfully expanded worldwide during the so-called "Lost 30 Years." It's essential to remember these achievements. However, these stories alone have not universally propelled Japan’s growth. As we look to the next 30 years, we must gather these achievements and forge them into a new collective strength.
